Famous Italian Food
Robert (Romaldo) Fontecchio emigrated from Capistrano, Italy, in 1898, at
age 18 to work the mines in Wakefield, Michigan. His bride, Laura joined
him in 1936 at age 20. They lived in Hurley, Wisconsin, a town which was
infamous for bootlegging and “girls”. Robert (Romaldo) purchased 40
acres on the Spread Eagle curve in 1926. Spread Eagle was known as
“Little Hurley”.
They operated the Pine Tree from the 1930s until 1956 when El Capitan
was established. Many friends and family have worked here over the years and the restaurant is in its
3rd generation of family ownership.
When El Capitan was started, Robert (Romaldo) and Laura had the idea of serving quality Italian food in
an enjoyable atmosphere. The same holds true today, all of our pasta, sauces, bread, meatballs and
Italian dinners are homemade and cooked to order, it may take a little longer for your dinner to be
completed. This assures that you are getting the freshest possible food anywhere.
